This is the fifth (and in my opinion the
best) episode of the Space Quest series. The story's more complete and the
whole game feels much more real. The reason for that is probably the 'Star
Trek - like' environment. It may be a knock-off, but who cares if it's
this great.
Roger finds himself a space cadet at the Starcon Academy. Between skipping
classes and sleeping through lectures he spends his time in the simulator
pretending to be a captain. He even forgets about his finals, but in an
incredible stroke of luck (thanks to a power failure) he somehow gets a
perfect score. His first assignment is captaining a garbage scow. He has
to travel to various planets to pick up the dumped waste. During his
travels he learns about a company (Genetix) which has developed a virus
that turns people into hideous mutants. These mutants want to take over
the universe and of course Roger is the only one that can stop them. This
is only the main storyline, there are several 'bonus runs' like the
womandroid that wants to kill Roger (he still didn't pay for that mating
whistle he ordered back in Space Quest II).
This is my favorite Space Quest game. Space Quest VI might look better and
all that (it fills a whole CD so I don't consider that such a big deal),
but it lacks something that this game has. I can't really put my finger on
it, but I think you'll see if you give it a try. Now let's see the usual
properties. The graphics are great, I especially liked the little sketches
that serve as movie sequences to advance the story. The music is also
great, probably the best MIDI music I've heard in a Sierra game. There
still aren't too many songs, but at least you never hear complete silence.
There's always something going on, noises in the background etc. I think I
don't have to waste too much time with the story, I gave it a 10 for a
reason. To sum things .up, this really is the greatest Space Quest game so
far
